Greg F. Squillante made his final crossing on Monday December 8th, 2014 (perfectly coinciding with the days snow flurries – no coincidences there)…
Founder of the POTEGP Spiritual Guidance Center, Spiritual Guide, Mentor, Teacher Best Friend, Husband, Father, Brother the lists of titles of roles he fills and the numerous hats he wore could go on and on and on. Depending on who you are talking to the titles and labels change. He would preach the problem with human language and say labels are just labels, but beneath it all it is the concepts and meaning to the labels what matter most, giving birth to who we really are or ideas in which we conceive…
Since I’ve known Greg, I knew our time here was limited – he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer before we met. He was retired and since age 55 began primarily focusing on his own Spiritual growth. This being said, I have never seen a busier “retired” person in my life… throughout my apprenticeship there would be times I would become saddened by his imminent departure and to comfort me he would tell me “It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all”…I know now though through his examples and teachings that even better is to simply love.
Many times during lessons I would look up in awe of this person who has accomplished so much…
Greg lived his life for others and as a spiritual person, which means he also lived for the betterment himself…He would always say, “I’m half Portuguese and half Italian, half of me does favors and the other collects IOU’s.” Even after the cancer spread, he stressed, not about death, but about getting things done for his family, making sure they were all set in their future. His loyalty to those he loved is just one of his legacies. What better way to teach than to live and lead by ones own examples!
Greg’s lessons and examples on how to better your life, become more aware, or have more free will (and those that know him – all know how Greg loved to test his own free will), are available to all who wish to be guided. But there is a catch, he will collect his IOU, you must pay it forward.
One of my most favorite books is the Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. The fountainhead is a symbol that represents, that from which all things come. I think for most everyone that has embraced Greg into their lives can say that he is the Fountainhead. His rare, backwards thinking creates and enables things to happen… whether it is his 30 plus businesses, the ingenuity and inventive projects (one of the most memorable inventions is the air ship that he designed with capabilities to land on both water and land – the picture below I bought for him in memory of the days spent designing this ship). He not only could perceive others – but could help them learn how to hone this skill (he taught many how to fish rather than just handing out fish, whether people liked it or not).
When I was going through tough times during my apprentice training, Greg once said that all he can do is shine the light. It is up to me to walk in it or not. The point is, it is a choice and one that is only yours to make. So though his physical presence is not with us. The truth is Greg still remains, he has simply shifted his awareness to a dimension beyond what our eyes can see. BUT our spirit knows better…his lessons are part of him, and if by choice you follow his lessons or ask for help, he will be there with you guiding you.
Greg taught me that there is no unchanging self. He did not invent this universal truth (I think he was busy re-inventing the wheel in too many other departments of his life). Greg is the one who helped me understand and know the essence of the fact that change is a constant force in our lives.
Greg is with us in our thoughts, memories, he is with us as he always has been. Those whom have met Greg (and trust me I have seen him change the lives of people in a matter of seconds in an elevator with even the smallest gesture that would end with laughter) no matter the time they have been in his presence they have been inspired, have admired, found respect for, grew to trust, gave loyalty to him (and again another long list of words that could go on)… what I am trying to say is what you really love about Greg, these qualities are the parts that still exist, the parts that transcend the three physical dimensions (3d) – his spirit/soul/aura and true essence (or as we like to say the non-3d parts – which I think is a label invented by John, Greg’s brother when they used to have spiritual discussions or some might even say spiritual debates). The non-3d exists in us all (as Greg would like to say “if the universe has “21+” dimensions, everything in the universe has exactly that” – he would often use scientific analogies as his educational background was in engineering and physics). The many ways our bodies may limit us I believe are why we are here, to give us opportunities to learn to grow and to transcend. Greg surely has transcended and paved a way for many to follow in his footsteps…
Later on Monday afternoon while driving a big truck ended up right in front of me – At first I was distracted by my own thoughts – then I noticed what the truck had on it, A phoenix, huge and golden and right in my face. The very symbol of cyclical regeneration was giving me a wink and a nod or as Greg would say I was getting a marshmallow (He teased me often because he would say his guides mostly provided him with wrenches). A couple of years ago during one of his lessons Greg had used the story of the phoenix as a way to express that not only is there a death and rebirth from one life to the next (even if you do not believe in reincarnation – it works as an analogy for the death of your physical life to your existence and emergence of your soul unbounded in your afterlife) But the phoenix reminds us that in each moment there is a death and a rebirth in oneself.
Greg is part of the universe as he always has been, he is simply changed.
For those that knew him I can guarantee he has changed you. For those that don’t know him directly, the ripples of his kindness and wisdom will (if your reading this, it has already begun). Greg opened the Spiritual Guidance Center so he could pass down the lessons of his teachers and guides for those who are seeking. The POTEGP Spiritual Guidance Center is his way of giving back. As it is in the process of being built, he wanted to make sure family and friends were involved so that it had that sense of community – people coming together for the same cause. Within his family, myself and all his students his legacy his lessons will continue.
I am honored and privileged to have worked with Greg (in the 3d…and I’m sure it will continue through the non-3d). Throughout my apprenticeship Greg has helped me understand his lessons (the lessons of his guides), who he is, and who I am and who I’d like to be. I am grateful for his Trust and Faith in me to continue his work and humbled by his amazing family who has been supportive to make his vision possible.
Dance with the memories and sing out loud with those who have felt what you have felt in his presence (as I say this I am flooded by memories of watching mama mia – singing to the songs and just enjoying being who we are – the sangha effect). I want you to know that he is with you always. If you have been inspired by his guidance let that take hold, let that dwell inside and be who you are now. He has been there for your helping you cross a river. His physical presence represents a raft, a tool. You must let it go, going forward for the next journey ahead. Accept with grace in your hearts and faith that his passing is not a thing to dwell in anger over. If you have felt blessed as I have, pay it forward in your own way – give back – let go of any loss or doubts and instead hold onto LOVE – it is what he asks of you.
I will be forever grateful for the opportunities, the lessons, and the bravery he has given and inspired in me. Those moments as can only be described as “scary but liberating”
Like the phoenix as it transforms from its own ashes, Greg is with us – so even as we say goodbye to one facet of him make sure you also say hello. And if you thought while reading this that I have been repetitive in trying to get the message across well then you should have been around for one of Greg’s lessons/lectures or writing sessions!
I’d like to share with you one of Greg’s favorite poems from Robert Frost,
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
I am happy to know Greg no longer has miles to go!
